Cathy Fink and Duck Donald began playing together in 1973 and
plied the North American
folk and country music festival circuit throughout the '70's, before releasing an album in 1978 ("Cathy Fink & Duck Donald") and going their separate ways one year later. Fink, who
began her career in Montreal, subsequently released a number of folk and children's albums, got into production work for artists like yodelling legend Patsy Montana, and has been
nominated for 11 Grammys in the folk and children's categories along with her musical partner Marcy Marxer. Duck Donald formed his
own band before he passed away in 1984.
Cathy and Duck's music together is squarely in the old-time bluegrass tradition. "Cornbread Wiggle" is a instrumental rag; "getaway music," if you want to call it that, but not nearly so cornpone. "Don't Get Weary" and "Just Because" feature first-class guitar picking and soaring melodies, with Donald harmonizing alongside Fink's purer tones in kind of an affected hillbilly falsetto. My favourite of the three is "Just Because," which is a deceptively pretty kiss-off song.
