Les Hou-Lops - singer Gilles Rousseau, guitarists Claude Domingue and Yvan Cote, bassist Jean-Claude Brassard and drummer Claude Laviolette - were a '60's beat group based out of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. Local shows led to appearances on a Sherbrooke TV station, a debut album recorded and released in 1963, and tours of Europe with groups like The Rolling Stones and The Animals in '64 and '66. Along the way they had sizable hits in Quebec with the singles "What Good Is It" and "Mother In Law," but were forced to break up in 1969 when Rousseau developed health problems which eventually led to his premature death in 1972. In the mid-'90's, the three surviving members (Laviolette passed away in 1981) reformed the band for occasional club and outdoor festival appearances, most notably in their hometown of Saint-Hyacinthe.
Les Hou-Lops were one of the better-known Quebecois garage acts of their day, and Googling them turns up a fairly sizable number of links, albeit entirely in French. You can even watch them on YouTube here and here. The three songs (all solid garage-rock stompers) I'm posting here are from a compilation with selections by the 1965 "Les Grands prix du Festival du disque" nominees. "Quand on est amoureux" is a cover of "She's About A Mover" by The Sir Douglas Quintet, "Mother In Law" was an Ernie K-Doe tune written by Allen Toussaint, and "She's The One" was a 1964 hit for The Chartbusters.
