Ron McLeod and The Lincoln County Boys

I was only able to track down one lonely reference to Ron McLeod and The Lincoln County Boys. So, without further ado, the liner notes:

"Ron McLeod and The Lincoln County Boys are one of the busiest bands in Country Music today. So tight is their schedule it is almost impossible to get them into a studio to record. Arc Records has managed to do this, however, and to the many admirers of this group this will be a most welcome development. For those not familiar with their work, ON THE ROAD with Ron McLeod and The Lincoln County Boys will prove the right road to lasting, exciting listening pleasure.

RON McLEOD: Born in Hamilton, Ontario. He spent several years in the Steel Company of Canada performing on radio, television and various show dates when his job would allow. In 1963 he decided to form a group called the Lincoln County Boys and enter into show business full time. Since then, he and the Lincoln County Boys have played club and show dates all over North America and have as well landed their own show on Channel 11 T.V. [Note: I found one reference to the show, named "Jamboree", here - scroll down to Bill Sawyer.]

STAN VAUGHANS: Stan was born in Castor Centre, Ontario. he started his musical career on the piano at the age of seven. His first professional job was playing the fiddle at chuch concerts, and his Country debut playing bass with a group called the Ontario Ramblers, in Smithville. This led to a meeting with Ron McLeod some ten and one half years ago and the growth of a friendship that has kept them playing together for the past decade.

BILL SAWYER: Bill was born in New Carlisle, Quebec where he started his musical career at the tender age of eight, playing the fiddle. At the age of ten he was accomplished enough to play various dances and social engagements in and around New Carlisle. He has had some ten years experience on the road. Seven years ago he took up the guitar and before long became one of the top lead guitar men in the country. He has been a member of the Lincoln County Boys for two years.

AL REESE: Al was born in Hamilton, Ontario. At the age of seventeen he became interested in music and decided he would like to become a drummer. After a few lessons a job was offered by a rock group. He accepted and remained with it for two years. Several other jobs followed in the rock field. He was then asked to join the Lincoln County Boys. Al's great ability and adaptness soon made him a top-notch country drummer. He has been a Lincoln County Boy for two years and also sings and plays the bass."

"Bottle of Wine" is a raucous version of the oft-covered Tom Paxton folk-rock standard with some punky, snarled vocals on the verses, and "Chicken Pickin'" is an awesome garage country-rock instrumental highlighted by a twangy guitar solo about halfway through.

In my travels, I found a second Ron McLeod album. This one, called "Country Music on Top of the World" is in reference to a series of shows they did in Greenland. The cover picture, in fact, show Ron and the Lincoln County Boys posing in their parkas in the snowy barren landscape. I was hoping that maybe this was a live album, but it is in fact another studio set of some great rockin' country songs.

Cigarette is a hilarious track, featuring a segment reminiscent of "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour". House of Love keeps the groove going, and I was half expecting something like X's Burning House of Love, but no, it's not. Lastly, if there's a song on any album, anywhere, named Swamp Devil, you know I want to hear it.
