The Montreal Black Community Youth Choir

The Montreal Black Community Youth Choir was formed by Rev. Frank Gabourel,Daisy Peterson Sweeney (jazz pianist Oscar Peterson's sister) and Trevor Payne in 1974. In 1982, the MBCYC became the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Union United Church, Montreal's oldest black community church. The Jubilation Choir has gone on to record several albums and establish a reputation as one of the best choirs on the planet. They also, uh, performed with New Kids on the Block, Foreigner and Celine Dion, but made up for that somewhat by also appearing with Ray Charles. Trevor Payne has also been named to the Order of Canada for his charitable works and musical contributions.

"I Told Jesus" is a spare, melancholy number about keeping one's faith in the face of betrayal, and features a beautiful solo performance by an unidentified female singer. "Geographical Fugue" is a secular tune, a fugue comprised entirely of place names. If you're looking for a road song that name-drops Lake Titicaca, Yokohama, Honalulu, Trinidad, Tibet and the Mississippi River, well...today is your lucky day.
