North Preston, Nova Scotia,
part of a larger community on the outskirts of Halifax known
collectively as Preston, is a pocket of African-Canadian culture
settled as early as 1782 by freed slaves who had fought on the side
of Britain during the American Revolution.
This album, which I found during a trip to
Halifax, doesn't say when it was recorded, but if I had to hazard a
guess based on the hairstyles and clothes worn in the group photo on
the back cover, I'd say the '70s. There are too many choir members
to list individually, but the guitar is played by Allister Johnson,
the organ by Erin Rose Fraser and the bass by Randy Downey. "God
Gave Me A Song" is a cover of a popular 1970 gospel number by Myrna
Summers, while "Our Lord Will Make A Way" is an Ike & Tina
Turner song. "God Gave Me" features the entire choir, while "Our
Lord" is a solo turn by an uncredited female singer. Both are funky
little gospel tunes with nice interplay between the bass, guitar and
organ.
