The Canadian Jazz Archive has an entry on Dr. McJazz, but it doesn't include much beyond a list of the band members and a photo of the bassist, Ron Johnston. However, this album's liner notes inform us that the band was part of a long-standing "Scottish Mafia" within the Toronto jazz scene. Charlie Gall (cornet, drums and vocals) and Ian Arnott (clarinet, vocals) were native Scots, while pianist Dave Flowitt was English and the rest of the group - Ken Rodmell (trombone, vocals), Johnston and Al Mayers (drums, vocals) - were Canadian. Arnott's career in jazz stretched back to the '50s, when he played with Mike White's Imperial Jazz Band, while Rodmell's experience included work with dance bands and small jazz ensembles in Hamilton.
This LP was recorded live in 1977 with special guests Mike Walmsley (guitar, banjo) and Al Lawrie (clarinet). Both of the songs I've posted here are covers; "Apex Blues" is a Jimmie Noone track, while "Struttin' With Some Barbeque" is a Louis Armstrong classic.
