Reg Watkins-Reg Watkins is Cam Canuck

For my first entry on It Came From Canada, I will be breaking the seal on a sealed copy of The Reg Watkins is Cam Canuck album. Today will be the first time I have heard these two recordings as well. The sound should be nice and clean. I just broke the seal and there is no inner sleeve or liner notes; that’s disappointing, but it hasn’t lost that first lovely scent of virgin vinyl mixed with 35 year old cardboard. Both albums that I have selected for today were taken from the Newfoundland section of the museum. These two titles ooze of Canadiana on an all-Canadian label from the ‘70’s, Snocan. I picked the Reg Watkins LP on a trip to Newfoundland a few years back. Cam Canuck, Snocan label SCN 505 from 1975. Snocan was a very small and short-lived label in the mid-seventies, with around 20 or so lp titles and 140 or so 45's, which featured all-Canadian artists. Reg hails from Heads Harbour, Newfoundland (pop. 1102 in 2001). Heads Harbour is on Triton Island (formerly Troy towne Islands), a small fishing community which has the Triton’s Seafood processing plant. A few hundred years earlier, this area was inhabited by Beothuk. It was also the location of the HMS Antelope shipwreck (Captain John Cartwright), who was searching for Beothuk when shipwrecked back in the 1700's. The album was produced by Ralph Carlson and Ron Sparling and was recorded at Carlsound Studios, Ottawa. The cover artwork was done by Bruce Rawlins, Ottawa. Later on in the 80’s, Cam teamed up with Loretta Cormier for 2 albums on the Lone Raven label, but these are Cam’s first recordings.
