Peter Tessier - By Turning a Knob

by Robert Williston 24. October 2009 10:17

This is arguably the best folk psych album recorded by a Canadian in Canada. That's a big statement, but Peter Tessier's album By Turning a Knob really meets all criteria for one of the top Canadian folk psych albums. If some albums in this genre rely on their rarity to be a prize on the collector market, this one relies solely on the music. You won't find a copy of this because nobody wants to give up their copy. That's why it commands about $800.00 for a top copy. Sure there were probably 500 of these pressed, but it could have been housed in a plain white cover and it still would also have "One of the most Legendary Canadian Albums ever recorded in Canada" status.  These words are reserved for only two dozen or so Canadian albums, and are normally very difficult to come by (at least by me). Canada certainly has it's fair share of legendary psychadelic folk recordings; but this one stands above all others. When you drop the needle on this album, you become mesmerized by its beauty. You are drawn into its emotion. It has great cover art, by Bart Schoales. Back cover has a portrait sketch of Tessier by Christine Middleton. Arrangement by Peter Tessier; Produced by Ben Kaye and Peter Tessier; Executive Producer: John Williams.  He recorded this album and a lone 45 on Columbia in 1973. As mentioned below, prior to the release of this album, Peter Tessier provided the sound Engineering for the Melchior Alias ST LP on Capitol 70024, which was released in 1969 and also for the Life self-titled album on Polydor 2424 001, released in 1970. After the release of this album, his only solo effort, Peter went on to provide Sound Engineering for Morse Code Procréation LP on Capitol 70046 and he produced the André Gagnon Neige LP on London Records SP 44252, both in 1975. He was also the producer, arranger, or conductor, for a slew of Canadian disco releases including Chatelaine, Goldie Alexander, Sophie Stanke, Black Light Orchestra, Space Project, Kaméléon, Tuxedo Junction, Danny V, Patrick Norman, Voggue etc.

True to the above, the tracks here represent the entirety of side one. Some tracks blend into the next.
